Liberia is home to a unique natural treasure: the incredibly biodiverse Upper Guinean Rainforest, home to a crucial population of critically endangered West African Chimpanzees. The country – which is still reeling from a civil war and the Ebola crisis – wants to fight poverty by exporting timber. But given the rampant corruption of Liberia's logging industry, this move could lead to uncontrolled destruction of rainforests.
The EU is implementing a timber trade agreement under which it will import timber from Liberia without further control if the country guarantees that it is legally sourced. There is very little chance that this will work – it is highly likely that laundered illegal timber will find its way onto the European market.
Please call on the European Commission and the Member States to keep timber from illegal Liberian concessions out of the EU.
