Urgent Request from Anti Slavery International
Since our Home Alone:
End Domestic Slavery campaign helped achieve a new international Convention on domestic work in June, the UK government has announced alarming new proposals to change the current domestic worker visa which would stop vulnerable domestic workers at risk of abuse and slavery from changing employers.
Allowing domestic workers to leave abusive employers and work within another household is extremely important in providing an escape route, ensuring they are not faced with a choice of continuing to suffer or fleeing and becoming destitute and 'illegal'.
Throughout our campaigning for the UK to support this Convention, the Government constantly reassured us that domestic workers already have strong protections in the UK. The Government's refusal to vote in favour of the international Convention was hugely disappointing but now some of these very important provisions which protect domestic workers in the UK stand to be dissolved.
Back in 2008 we called on you to help us reverse similar Government proposals, which helped us achieve a temporary halt to any changes. Please help us to stop these proposals for good.
Please take action
