Action by Christians Against Torture (acat(uk) was formed in 1984 by the then British Council of Churches, with the active support of Amnesty International and Society of Friends. acat(uk) is affiliated to the International Federation of Action by Christians for the Abolition of Torture (FIACAT) in Paris, and is a Body in Association with Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI). acat(uk)'s aim is to work, as Christians, for the abolition of torture worldwide. We seek to increase awareness in the Churches and among Christians of the widespread and evil use of torture and the need, for reasons of Christian faith, to campaign for its abolition.
Torture is totally banned in international law under ALL circumstances, including war, civil war, internal conflict and terrorist attack (Article 2 of the UN Convention Against Torture). There is no opt out but people still think that torture can be used in special circumstances - witness what happened after 9/11 when some argued that its use could be justified then.
Christian Solidarity Worldwide is a Christian organisation working for religious freedom through advocacy and human rights, in the pursuit of justice.
Their primary work is advocacy, which we use to influence the legislation, policies, attitudes and behaviours which reinforce religious discrimination and persecution. Through this, we aim to bring about lasting cultural, social and political change.
CSW's evidence-based reports are widely used and cited by the Foreign Office, US State Department, US Commission on International Religious Freedom, UN and others on a regular basis. We regularly brief officials from the European Council, the European Commission, current and future EU presidencies, MEPs, and NGOs on the situations in all our key countries of focus.
War Resisters' International (WRI) works for a world without war. We are a global pacifist and antimilitarist network with over 80 affiliated groups in 40 countries. We remain committed to our 1921 founding declaration that 'War is a crime against humanity. I am therefore determined not to support any kind of war, and to strive for the removal of all causes of war'. All wars, including wars of 'liberation' and 'humanitarian military intervention' are used to serve some power political or economic interest. All war leads to suffering, destruction, and new structures of domination.
