It is an inspiring and accessible document, whose ninety pages are well worth reading completely. The challenges of a life of faith are not sidestepped. But neither is the context of joy in which a true life of faith is lived. It is a letter masterfully adorned with scripture, which is integral to Pope Francis’ clear and engaging message.

While offering us the comfort of Saint Paul’s words: ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness’ (2 Cor 12:9), there is a characteristic piece of Francis advice not to lose confidence and become ‘disillusioned pessimists, “sourpusses”’ (85). Try that admission at the sacrament of reconciliation.
