Alan Mackinnon, Chair of Scottish CND said: 
“This vote today gives an enormous shot in the arm for the peace movement in Scotland and across the world.  Scotland’s Parliament has spoken for the people.  The new Scottish Government now has a mandate to call on the UK Parliament to reverse its decision of 14th March.  Any future British Prime Minister would be unwise to ignore this call”.

“We welcome the Executive’s proposal to convene a summit of stakeholders and we will be willing to participate in this process.”

The Green Party motion was amended by the Liberal Democrats.  The motion passed said:

“That the Parliament congratulates the majority of Scottish MPs for voting on 14 March 2007 to reject the replacement of Trident, recognises that decisions on matters of defence are matters within the responsibility of the UK Government and Parliament and calls on the UK Government not to go ahead at this time with the proposal in the White Paper, The Future of the United Kingdom’s Nuclear Deterrent.”

71 MPSs voted for this motion, 16 against and 39 abstained.

The decision of the Parliament backs up the evidence from Scottish Churches, Trade Unions, opinion polls and 33 of the 59 Scottish MPs that Scotland does not want to play host to a new generation of nuclear weapons.
