Philip Hammond, the Secretary of State for Defence, was called to the Commons after trying to quietly announce a
£1.1 billion investment contract in part to develop reactors for the Trident replacement submarines. The investment is part of a controversial plan to order the reactors before the go-ahead decision to construct the submarines has even been made - due to be in 2016.
An impressive number of MPs from all parties turned out to criticise the government, with former Minister David Lammy asking, 'Will the Secretary of State explain to my constituents in Tottenham what will make them safer: cutting Trident to fund extra police officers or cutting police officers to fund Trident?'
