A violent escalation in hostilities between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh has resulted in casualties and warnings of 'large-scale war'.  Nagorno-Karabakh, roughly translated as 'mountainous black garden', is a landlocked region that became part of Azerbaijan in the 1920s.
