National Secretary Richard McCready and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Alan McDonald, hand over our petition against the replacement of Trident to the Ministry of Defence.

National Secretary Richard McCready and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Alan McDonald, hand over our petition against the replacement of Trident to the Ministry of Defence.  The petition contains about 20,000 signatures and was signed by people from all parts of Scotland and even by some from beyond Scotland.  The National Office was happy to provide a service to Scotland’s churches in coordinating the petition.  The government should be concerned that Scotland’s churches are united in opposition to nuclear weapons; the government should listen to our voice.  The petition is not the end of this campaign. We must continue to remind the government of what our Bishops have said on the issue of the replacement of Trident and remind the government of the words of Pope Benedict XVI that we must ‘strive for a progressive and concerted nuclear disarmament.’
